CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACADEMIA SERVING MINORITIES:

Fostering Risk Management and Cybersecurity Training Programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions

African-Americans make up only three percent of the information security analysts in the U.S in a field where jobs are expected to grow 18 percent through 2024. As with any business or organization, colleges and universities face significant risk to operations when financial losses occur. Because Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) often have limited resources, the impact of unforeseen problems -- declining enrollment, rising operational costs, financial deficits, changes to state or federal funding -- can be crippling.

Too often, these institutions perceive new ventures as unattainable and fail to consider them because of their focus on the urgent day-to-day operations and a lack of the critical mass needed to divert resources toward growth.

For these reasons, the Thought Leadership & Innovation Foundation (TLI) has developed a program that focuses on operationalizing organizational risk management and mitigation processes. We want to facilitate the adoption, practice and maintenance of a robust cybersecurity and risk management strategy for these institutions in a way that blends education and paid work experience opportunities for students.

Creating Sustainability

HBCUs and MSIs face a huge challenge: providing relevant, timely, and market-based training and education in an ever-evolving environment. Our program seeks to foster a systematic way to mitigate the risks they face as a business, and the financial and reputational risk realized when students drop out of school before graduation.

We expect to provide the necessary human resources and tools to establish a risk management framework and achieve the critical knowledge transfer that will enable sustainable risk management and mitigation processes.

For students, our program would enable them to work while going to school, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their chosen field of study and helping them to build their résumé, earn money for expenses, and develop a network of life-long contacts.

This would better position them to land higher paying jobs after graduation and gain the necessary experience and knowledge to qualify as an applicant to sit for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited Risk Management Society (RIMS) Associate Risk Management Professional (ARMP) examination.
